South Lantau Water Activities: Surfing, SUP, Wingfoil, Rentals and Coastal Routes

Lower Cheung Sha Beach

Lower Cheung Sha Beach combines clear water and fine sand with well-developed facilities. Beachfront restaurants and professional water-sports centres make it a popular base for beginners and recreational visitors.

Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP): Cheung Sha faces the open sea and sometimes receives small swells, but the beach slopes gently near the shore at Lower Cheung Sha. On calmer days, it is a good place to rent a SUP. Balancing over the incoming swell creates a different rhythm from paddling on sheltered, mirror-flat water.

Beginner surfing: Lower Cheung Sha regularly receives broken waves, or whitewater, in waist-deep water. Beginners can rent a buoyant foam longboard to practise paddling prone, reading waves and the pop-up movement close to shore.

Wingfoil lessons: This newer water sport has grown in popularity. Professional centres at Lower Cheung Sha, including Long Coast Seasports, offer instructor-led introductory sessions. Beginners first learn wing handling on land before moving onto the water to practise foil balance. Some courses include a support boat that follows participants.

🌊 Long Coast Seasports: A Closer Look

Long Coast Seasports at Lower Cheung Sha Beach combines a professional water-sports centre, holiday accommodation and beachfront dining in one resort. Its sandy, sea-facing location offers an escape from the city for surfing, SUP and wingfoil.

Water Activities and Professional Courses

Making use of Lower Cheung Sha’s wind and wave conditions, Long Coast Seasports offers a range of equipment rentals and professional courses:

Surfing for beginners and improvers: Cheung Sha receives swell and whitewater throughout the year. The centre rents beginner-friendly foam longboards and a selection of hard boards for more experienced surfers. Instructors offer individual or small-group lessons, whether you are learning to paddle and pop up near shore or working on riding across a wave face.

Wingfoil courses: Qualified instructors lead introductory classes in this increasingly popular sport. Participants start by learning to handle the handheld wing on land, then practise balance and lift-off with a foil board on the water. Some advanced courses provide an inflatable support boat to follow participants.

SUP and kayak rentals: Complete SUP equipment and single or double kayaks are available. In calm conditions, paddle over the gentle open-sea swell for a different balancing experience from sheltered bays, or explore the approximately 3 km Cheung Sha coastline at a leisurely pace.

Resort Facilities: Water Sports, Barbecues and Overnight Stays

The range of facilities makes Long Coast Seasports a convenient option for a two-day, one-night break:

Glamping and accommodation: Options include safari-style glamping tents, caravans and sea-view rooms. Accommodation packages commonly include water-activity vouchers for using kayaks, SUP or bodyboards, so guests can enjoy the beach and return to their accommodation for a rest.

Beachfront barbecues and dining: A large outdoor barbecue area sits beside the beach. After your activity, enjoy barbecued seafood and meat, a cold drink and the evening scenery of South Lantau.

Changing facilities: Lockers, hot and cold showers and changing rooms are available, making it convenient for day visitors as well as overnight guests.

Upper Cheung Sha Beach

Upper Cheung Sha adjoins Lower Cheung Sha but has a quieter, less developed feel and fewer swimmers. It appeals to experienced water-sports enthusiasts looking for more space and a natural setting.

Intermediate surfing: Under certain wind conditions, the shape of the coast can produce steeper, more powerful wave faces than at Lower Cheung Sha. Surfers who have mastered the basics, can read waves independently and ride across the face often bring their own boards here for longer rides.

Coastal kayaking: Experienced paddlers can start at Lower Cheung Sha and follow the coast towards quieter Upper Cheung Sha, taking in Lantau’s green hills and long beaches from the water. South Lantau is exposed to monsoon winds: do not paddle out to sea or towards the Shui Hau peninsula during strong offshore winds.
