What is the difference between equipment rental and a guided tour?

With equipment rental you set out on your own, free to choose your route and timing — suited to those with some experience or who prefer to explore independently. On a guided tour a coach leads the way, provides commentary on the route, geology and local history, and handles safety support — better suited to a first outing.

Kayak or SUP — which should a beginner choose?

Accepted Answer

Beginners should start with a kayak. You sit inside the hull and paddle with a double-bladed paddle, giving a low centre of gravity and better handling in wind and chop. A SUP is paddled standing with a single blade: the view is more open and it suits photography, but it is harder to control in strong wind. In Sai Kung’s sheltered waters both work for first-timers, though a kayak is more forgiving.

Which destinations around Sai Kung are good for paddling?

Popular destinations include Sharp Island (Kiu Tsui Chau, with its tombolo and volcanic rock formations inside the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark), Pak Sha Chau (the "Angel Path" sandbar revealed at low tide), Yeung Chau (closest to shore, ideal for a first outing) and Yim Tin Tsai (a 200-year-old Hakka Catholic village with restored salt pans).

Round-trip distances: Yeung Chau approx. 1 km, Pak Sha Chau approx. 2 km, Sharp Island approx. 5 km, and Yim Tin Tsai approx. 5 km. Actual time needed varies with weather and sea conditions.

Should I check the tides before setting out?

Accepted Answer

We recommend it. Tides affect where you can land and how good the snorkelling visibility is — the tombolo at Sharp Island is only exposed at low tide, and a tide height of around 1.6 m gives a comfortable depth for snorkelling without standing on coral. Which activity should a complete beginner start with?

Yes. A coach gives a basic briefing before departure covering paddling technique and water safety, so no experience is required. You can also pick a route to match your fitness, from Yeung Chau at around 1 km round trip to Sharp Island at around 5 km.

Question 8

What ages can take part? Can families join together?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The family kayak (2+1) has a dedicated safety seat and high-buoyancy design, well suited to parents with children. Guided tours also include family routes — tell us your group size and ages when booking and we will suggest a suitable option.

Question 9

Which activities can I bring my pet on?

Accepted Answer

For self-guided rentals, yes. We recommend a pet life jacket, and please consider the length of the trip since your attention will be divided. The family kayak has a maximum load of 280 kg and the double kayak 180 kg. For guided tours: pets are welcome on family tours; they are not recommended on snorkelling tours; and for SUP tours please consider your own weight (not exceeding 90 kg) and be prepared that balancing will be considerably harder.

What is the ISA-certified SUP course, and what do I get?

The ISA (International Surfing Association) is an international certifying body for water sports. The course is led by experienced coaches and covers stance and balance, paddling technique, turning and control, and water safety. On completion you receive an internationally recognised SUP certification. Courses are offered at bronze and silver levels and require some basic paddling experience — complete beginners should start with a guided tour.

What environmental guidelines should I follow when paddling in Sai Kung?

Accepted Answer

The waters around Sharp Island are home to plate, brain and daisy corals, which are extremely sensitive to contact — a single step can destroy years of growth. Please do not touch coral or stand on the seabed, do not remove any marine life, shells or stones, take your rubbish with you, and choose reef-safe sunscreen.
